Hostel accommodation in Pakistan is a business built on seats, not units. An operator in Johar Town or Gulberg is not letting five flats — they are letting sixty seats across single-seater, double, triple and four-seater rooms, and the difference between a good month and a bad one is how many of those seats were occupied and paying. The paperwork that runs it is usually a register, a mess diary, a WhatsApp group for the wardens and a bundle of handwritten rent slips. It works right up until a resident disputes a month, a guardian calls to ask why the mess bill changed, or you try to work out which of three buildings actually made money.
The market has a shape that generic international hostel software gets wrong in the first five minutes. Booking.com-style nightly-stay tools assume a guest who checks out on Sunday. A Pakistani hostel resident is a university student on a monthly seat with a security deposit, a guardian on file, a gate timing, and a mess bill that changes depending on whether they went home for Eid.
What operators call it in Pakistan
Get the vocabulary right or the page reads as though it was written somewhere else. In Pakistan the categories are:

Nobody in Pakistan says "PG" or "paying guest." Those are Indian terms. Using them signals immediately that whoever wrote the copy has never stood at the gate of a hostel in Township at 10pm.
How operators collect rent in Pakistan
Rent in a Pakistani hostel arrives through several channels in the same month, and reconciling them is most of the admin burden.
- JazzCash and Easypaisa — mobile wallets are how a large share of residents pay, especially those without a bank account. The resident sends from their wallet and screenshots the confirmation.
- Raast — the State Bank of Pakistan's instant payment system, which settles retail payments in real time and lets a payer send to a Raast ID linked to a mobile number and bank account. Operators increasingly ask for a Raast transfer because it clears immediately and the reference is unambiguous.
- Bank transfer (IBFT) — inter-bank fund transfer, still the default for larger properties and for guardians paying a semester at a time from another city.
- Cash — very much alive, particularly for mess top-ups, fines and short-notice payments, and the hardest channel to keep honest without a receipt trail.

Running a boys hostel or girls hostel in Pakistan
The operational year is driven by the academic calendar. Intermediate and FSc results feed university admissions, admissions feed the autumn intake, and hostels near the big campuses fill in a rush over a few weeks — Punjab University, UET and the private universities along the Lahore ring road; NED and the university corridor in Karachi; NUST, Quaid-i-Azam and the Islamabad–Rawalpindi belt; and the campus clusters in Faisalabad, Multan and Peshawar. Miss that window and you carry empty seats for a semester.
The rest of the job is register work. Admission forms with CNIC copies. Guardian phone numbers that actually get answered. Gate timings and leave slips when a resident goes home for the weekend. Security deposit taken at joining and adjusted at leaving, minus damages. Room changes mid-term when two residents cannot get along. A mess that has to be told how many plates to prepare tonight. And, at every property, the question of who is actually in the building right now — which matters for safety long before it matters for billing.
Record-keeping expectations vary between cities and provinces, and local police and district administrations have at times asked hostels to maintain and share resident records. Whatever the local requirement, a hostel that can produce a clean, current list of who occupies which seat, with identity documents and guardian contacts attached, is in a far better position than one working from a paper register.

Frequently asked questions
Do people in Pakistan say PG or paying guest?
No. In Pakistan the accommodation is a boys hostel, a girls hostel, a working women hostel or a boarding house. PG is Indian usage — it will read as foreign to a Lahore or Karachi operator, and residents searching for a room will not type it.
