A hostel in Nepal is not a room-letting business. It is a full-board business. The monthly fee a Kathmandu hostel charges covers the bed, lunch and dinner — usually dal bhat, sometimes breakfast as well — plus WiFi, utilities, furniture and a warden on site. That bundle is the product. It is why a Nepali operator's most common daily question is not "which rooms are free" but "how many plates tonight," and why software designed around bare rent plus a utility split misses what the operator is actually selling.
The second thing that defines the market is migration. Kathmandu's student hostels exist because students come to the valley from other districts for their education. Khabarhub reported in 2023, citing the sector, that around 90% of people staying in Kathmandu hostels are students from distant areas without relatives or rental accommodation near their colleges. Those residents arrive with a guardian in another district, a citizenship photocopy, and a college admission — and they leave when the course ends.

Two words to avoid: "dera", which is North Indian and Punjabi rather than Nepali, and "lodge", which in Nepal means a small budget hotel on a trekking or highway route.
How operators collect fees in Nepal
- Fonepay QR is the most widely accepted merchant QR network in the country. Fonepay is an F1Soft company licensed by Nepal Rastra Bank as a payment system operator, and its QR is accepted by a very large share of banks and wallets.
- eSewa is the largest wallet and is part of the same F1Soft group. Note the fragmentation: eSewa supports Fonepay QR, not NEPALPAY QR — "one QR, any app" is aspirational rather than universal in Nepal today.
- Khalti and IME Pay are the other major wallets; they combined in 2025 into a single, larger wallet business.
- connectIPS, run by Nepal Clearing House Limited, handles account-to-account transfer, and NCHL also operates NEPALPAY QR on the NepalQR national standard published by Nepal Rastra Bank.
- Bank transfer and cash remain ordinary, especially for guardians paying several months at once from outside the valley.

Running a student hostel in Nepal
The hostel districts of the Kathmandu valley are well established: Putalisadak and Bagbazar at the top of the market, then Baneshwor and New Baneshwor, Dillibazar, Ghattekulo, Shankhamul, Shantinagar, Buddhanagar, Maitidevi, Lazimpat and Basundhara, plus Kirtipur around the Tribhuvan University campus and Pulchowk, Sanepa and Kupondole in Lalitpur. Outside the valley, Pokhara, Bharatpur/Chitwan, Butwal and Tilottama, Dharan and Itahari all carry real education-driven demand.
The year has two demand waves rather than one:
- The +2 wave. SEE, the Secondary Education Examination taken at Grade 10, is held in March. Results follow, and the Grade 11 admission rush follows the results — this is the single biggest filling window of the year and it lands in the middle of the year.
- The bachelor and professional wave. Entrance examinations for medical, dental, nursing, pharmacy and allied bachelor programmes run under the Medical Education Commission's common entrance later in the year, with engineering intakes on their own schedule. This wave is smaller but higher-value and later.
Two structural facts about the sector are worth knowing. First, oversight is weak: the Kathmandu Post reported that registered hostels in the valley fell from 255 before 2017 to 141 in 2023, that the Cottage and Small Industries Office monitors registered properties for food quality, cleanliness and safety, and that many hostels operate unregistered with no local-level monitoring mechanism. Second, food quality is the single most-documented resident complaint — which makes a meal record and a complaint log more valuable here than in a market where the hostel does not cook.
On records, hostels commonly take a photocopy of the citizenship certificate (nagarikta) at admission, in the presence of a parent where the resident is young. The National Identity Card is being rolled out by DoNIDCR and is increasingly presented digitally through the Nagarik App.
